Its primary focus is to ensure that all employees receive their wages. Beyond that, the payroll function extends to a wide range of administrative and labor issues.

The Payroll Function includes the following tasks:

• Calculate the wages due to each employee, according to their contracted payment basis
• Calculate bonuses or deductions according to the specific work done by the employee during the period
• Calculate deductions of federal and local withholding taxes, social security, medicare, state and local social programs, and other pay-related obligations
• Determine deductions of pension and retirement contributions
• Include deductions of voluntary amounts (e.g. union dues, saving plans)
• Manage holiday, sick-pay, and other benefits or support payments
• Maintain records of all pay-related data
• Generate payment instructions – estimated tax determination, direct deposit, etc.
• Provide information to the accounting and audit efforts
• Prepare and distribute year end 1099s and W2s and file corresponding forms with Federal and Local jurisdictions.
• The Payroll function is computerized in almost all businesses. It is paper intensive and requires accuracy and strong audit control.
